Action Day on TVET for Sustainable Development, September 21st 2010: “TVET and Climate Protection”

As a part of the regional week on „Education for Sustainable Development“, InWEnt Saxony-Anhalt organized this year´s action day on TVET with a special focus on “TVET and climate protection” in cooperation with Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, the Foundation on Environmental and Climate Protection and the Ministries of Education and Culture and of Agriculture and Environment of Saxony-Anhalt.

 
76 representatives of regional ministries, enterprises, public schools, private education providers, research institutions and associations participated in the event.
 
In their opening speeches, the following participants shed light on the context of “Education for Sustainable Development” and also on the special topic of this year “TVET and climate protection”:
-          Dr. Harry Stolte, Head of Department InWEnt Saxony-Anhalt, presented the core areas that were decided after the World Conference 2009 on the UN Decade “Education for Sustainable Development”. In the light of these developments, he furthermore introduced the newly-opened UNEVOC Centre “TVET for Sustainable Development” in Magdeburg.
-          Jens Antefuhr, Head of Division in the Ministry of Education and Culture Saxony-Anhalt, commented on implementation strategies for the National Action Plan of the UN Decade Education for Sustainable Development in the vocational schools of Saxony-Anhalt
-          Peter Oleikiewitz, member of the regional government and chairman of the Foundation on Environmental and Climate Protection (SUNK), illustrated the main focuses of SUNK in the area of education activities towards better climate protection
 
Subsequently, Volker Begert, Head of Division for Climate Protection, Renewable Energies and Transport in the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Saxony-Anhalt, presented the „Concept for Climate Protection in Saxony-Anhalt 2020“. The following intensive discussions clearly indicated the great interest of all participants in this topic.
 
With his presentation on “Individual adaptation to climate protection – status quo and future perspectives”, Prof. Florian Kaiser, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, approached the issue of changing attitudes and behaviors from the angle of behavioral science.
 
In addition, a “Market of Possibilities” presented vocational school projects that impressively showed how topics of education for sustainable development are already integrated into vocational training processes.
 
On this basis, working groups were formed to develop new approaches and strategies fort he integration of education for sustainable development in vocational education and training and to discuss potential cooperation possibilities of education and training providers in the following areas:
-          industrial-technical professions
-          commercial professions
-          health, care and social professions
 
Representatives of the enterprises Helionat eG, dm Drugstore and InWEnt illustrated their different strategies for promoting education for sustainable development in a panel discussion.
 
On behalf of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), Dr. Andreas Diettrich introduced the new funding guideline “TVET for Sustainable Development” in the context of future activities in initial and further education and training in Germany.
 
In the final discussion, several proposals fort he intensification of integrating education for sustainable development into vocational education and training were made, such as:
-          Integration of methodical trainings on education for sustainable development in the education and training activities of professional teaching staff
-          More intensive use of the Round Table Sustainability and Development of Potentials in the area of vocational education and training
